The nights are becoming longer towards 17 hours of darkness per day.
You could be wasting £350 a year by disregarding the operational costs of a traditional security infrared (IR) lamp unit.
The majority of traditional tungsten IR lamps consume 500W/hr and on some CCTV units there can be two IR lamps consuming a total of 1000W/hr. A new replacement LED unit which offers the same illumination distance as a traditional tungsten IR lamp but with improved light spread, only consumes a much more efficient 70W/hr (official consumption figures obtained from Raytec product RayMAX 200 AI)
To operate 2 tungsten IR lamps consuming a combined 1000W/hr in winter with longer periods of night lasting for 17hrs, could cost £84 for the month of December per twin lamp CCTV unit. This should be compared to an LED unit which cost only £5.90 per CCTV unit. Over a year the difference could be £650 per unit! For a customer operating 10 twin lamp units the saving could be £6500 per year

The standard tungsten lamp unit creates a high intensity spot in the centre of the image with less illuminated detail in the surrounding field. Arguably 500W of electricity consumption just to create a bright white 'Spot'

The LED lamp unit is designed to create an even spread of soft light to avoid bright spots. The image is more clear and gives a better recognition of visual data.
